Successful action on the occasion of the International day for preservation of the ozone layer

Social Cooperative Humana nova in cooperation with utility companies ČAKOM, MURS-EKOM and PRE-COM, and Međimurje local government has successfully implemented the action of collecting used clothing, textile, footwear and clear plastic bags. Thus the following organizations marked the International day for the preservation of the ozone layer. International day for preservation of the ozone layer was named on the 16th Semptember 1987., day of the signing of the Montreal Protocol. Number of countries signatory to the protocol, from the original 46, grew up today to more than 150, among which is the Republic of Croatia, which signed a protocol in 1991.

The action was successfully conducted at 26 sites in Medjimurje County on saturday 15th September from 8 to 15 hours. More than 28 tons of used clothing and textiles were collected, 7 tons of shoes and a dozen bags of plastic bags! Collected clothing, textiles and footwear employees of Social Cooperative Humana Nova have sorted in several classes. The first class of goods is intended for resale to the greatest extent, whether through small shops Humana Nova, other second-hand stores in Croatia and abroad, and for donations to vulnerable families or individuals. The second class is a class of goods that is very similar to the first class - the difference is that the second class clothes is treated (removing stains on clothing), repaired (missing buttons, fasteners) or reclaimed. The third class of goods are partially usable products that often end up as material for new products from recycled materials of Humana Nova (some of the products can be seen in the recently published catalog available at The fourth class of goods are unusable clothing / textile products that are to be recycled and disposed of properly in collaboration with partners, to qualified organizations for recycling.

Recycling clothing and textiles has a major positive impact on the ozone layer and the atmosphere. By reusing 1 kg of cotton fabrics emissions of 3.6 kg of CO2 in the atmosphere is reduced and it is resulting from the decomposition of cotton in landfills, and we are also storing 6000 liters of drinking water and preventing use of 0.3 kg artificial fertilizers and 0.2 kg of pesticides in the production of cotton as raw material. This joint action by the Social cooperative Humana Nova, utility companies, local authorities, civil society organizations (NGOs Zora and Volunteer Bureau Medimurje), entrepreneurs (TID-EXTRA Ltd., Quantum LLC), volunteers and residents of Medjimurje county, we have reduced emissions by 100 tons CO2 in the atmosphere, saved 168 million liters of drinking water and prevented the use of 8400 kg artificial fertilizers and 5600 kg of pesticides! Recycling has an impact!
